This area in our home, other than just being our kitchen table where we eat all our meals, is where we watch the birds. We have three bird feeders right outside those double doors at the end. It is such a perfect place to have feeders, because we are all at the table at least three times a day and we can watch the birds come and go. One thing we have discovered is that the birds like to have breakfast when we do. We all delight in watching them and naming which birds come. If we don't know what kind of bird it is, we look in our bird books. They are strategically placed in a basket on the windowsill at the table. We then talk about the colors and size of said bird and look for it's name.
Here are a couple pictures of the our bird basket. As well as a few bird books, we also have a bird observation notebook. In the notebook, we write down the name, size, color, what the bird was doing and draw pictures of new birds that come to our feeders. I would like to get a pair of binoculars for the basket as well. I know we have a pair somewhere, but haven't seen them since we moved here.
Watching the birds together is such a great family table activity (maybe in another post I will write other things we do while at the table together). It spurs much conversation and excites us all about the beauty of God's creation.
